How to bulk process MagArrow magdata files?   1 Relevance 1 year ago Rui Zhang Software
If you have many .magdata files to convert, it is more convenient to use the command-based MagArrowConverter, instead of the Windows-based Survey Manager. The MagArrowConverter installation file can be downloaded from this link: Attachment : MagArrowConverterInstaller-2.2.129.0.zip To use the MagArrowConverter: Run “MagArrowConverterInstaller.exe” to install the converter. It is recommended NOT to install the converter on the default C:\Program Files\ directory since some computer may not allow users to create files in this directory. Open Windows Command (“cmd”) and enter the directory where the converter is installed. Type MagArrowConverter and press Enter key. A short instruction of how to use the converter will be printed out. If you run it from a different directory, type the full path, e.g. "C:\ Geometrics\MagArrowConverter\MagArrowConverter" (assuming the program is installed in C:\ Geometrics\MagArrowConverter\ directory). Note that to change the installation directory, you will have to un-installed the program first and then re-install and set up the directory. A typical example command: …\MagArrowConverter type=MA1 format=csv1 input=”C:\test\test.magdata” output=”C:\test\test.csv” decimation=10 A new csv file with sample rate of 10Hz will be created in C:\test directory from test.magdata file. After you become familiar with MagArrowConverter command, you can write a simple Batch Script to bulk process MagArrow .magdata files. An example batch code which searches for .magdata files in "C:\MagArrowData" folder and converts all files to .csv files at 10Hz is attached below. Attachment : batch example.zip
Why a 10Hz sample rate magnetometer base station is necessary?   1 Relevance 1 year ago Rui Zhang General Magnetometer Info
The Earth's magnetic field changes throughout the day due to solar wind and other factors. A base station's data is used to correct for these variations (diurnal variations), which can significantly impact the results of a survey. In general, diurnal variations do not change rapidly, and it is not required to record the Earth's magnetic field at high sample rates. However, during geomagnetic storms, diurnal variations can be so rapid that 10Hz or a higher sample rate is necessary to track the field change. Kp index is commonly used to measure the strength of geomagnetic activity. The diurnal variation on October 11th 2024, when the Kp index reached above 8, was shown in the plot below. Field changes as fast as 5nT/second were recorded. In comparison, the Kp index on October 15th was around 4. The diurnal variation was much slower. Sometimes if a survey site is close to man-made structures, such as railways, very rapid local magnetic field variations can also occur due to electrical current activities. A high sample rate magnetometer base station is also required in these situations, as well as some expertise in setting up the base station.
A simple mounting configuration to improve MagArrow stability during flights   1 Relevance 2 years ago Rui Zhang Hardware
Many of our customers have found out that widening the attaching points of a MagArrow can greatly improve its stability (reducing swings) during flights. If you are interested in designing a customized mounting fixture, a CAD file of a MagArrow baseplate can be found here:
MagEx Sample Data   1 Relevance 2 years ago Rui Zhang Application
A sample MagEx data can be downloaded from the link below: Attachment : MagEx_Sample_Data.zip The csv data file is directly exported from a MagEx project file (.DBT file, which is the raw binary MagEx data) using Survey Manager software. No additional data processing is applied. The data can be displayed in any plotting software, as shown below.
RE: Sensor box SD card   1 Relevance 2 years ago Rui Zhang G-864
The reason why the tablet lost connection with the sensor is because the G-864 WIFI has no internet access. The tablet will try to switch to another WIFI with internet access and disconnect from the G-864. To prevent this from happening, in the warning window of the tablet, select "don't ask again for this network" and click "Yes". Please remember to do this after you have used the tablet to access the internet.
RE: Half Rigid Suspension Design   1 Relevance 2 years ago Rui Zhang Hardware
A CAD file of MagArrow can be downloaded here if you want to design such a mounting structure. Attachment : MagArrow Shell.zip Please note that the external helical antenna is NOT in the CAD file.
Why do we see less structures in MagArrow surveys, compared with land magnetometer surveys?   1 Relevance 2 years ago Rui Zhang General Magnetometer Info
This is most likely due to the fact that land surveys are typically much closer to the ground (therefore closer to targets). Two spatially separated magnetic anomalies can be resolved on the ground but not several meters above the ground, as shown in the simulation plot below. The simulation is for two targets, separated by 4m, located at z= -2m, y=3m, x= 0m and z=-2m, y=7m, x=0m. The total magnetic signal on the x=0 plane from the two targets are plotted in 2D as a function of y and z (with z=0 being on the ground). For land magnetometer surveys, z = 0.5m or less. If we draw a line at z = 0.5m (survey line), it is clear that there will be 2 peaks in the sensor reading along y direction as long as the magnetometer has a high enough sample rate. Therefore, the two targets can be resolved. For MagArrow surveys, if the above ground level (AGL) is >3m, the two targets cannot be resolved no matter how high the sample rate is. This simulation also indicates a rule of thumb about the linespacing in MagArrow surveys. The linespacing should be about 1-2 times the AGL. Less than the AGL will not produce any higher resolution map. The simulation plot provides customers with a general idea of how fast the magnetic signal decays as a function of distance from the target. The signal falls as 1/R^3.
Why can't my computer connect to the MFAM Development Kit through Ethernet?   1 Relevance 2 years ago Rui Zhang Hardware
There are 3 main reasons: 1. Make sure your computer Ethernet port is set up correctly. (For more details, please refer to Appendix A of the user guide on the USB drive shipped with the Dev Kit) 2. Make sure you are connecting to the correct IP. Sometimes the Dev Kit IP is NOT set to the default 192.168.2.2, especially if you have more than one Dev Kit. 3. Make sure the Ethernet version of the firmware is loaded in the Dev Kit, instead of the WIFI version. To check to see if the Ethernet version of the firmware is loaded, plug an Ethernet cable into the Dev Kit Ethernet port and the PC Ethernet connector. Look to see if the two Ethernet Status LEDs on the Dev Kit light up. If the Ethernet Version of the firmware is loaded both LEDs will be lit. If not, the WiFi version of the firmware is probably installed. Note that even if the Ethernet firmware is loaded the WiFi adapter board in the Dev Kit will broadcast an SSID even though the Ethernet firmware doesn't look at the WiFi adapter at all. If the LEDs are NOT lit, reload the Ethernet firmware: remove the SD card, copy the Ethernet firmware to the SD card, and power cycle after plug the SD card back into the Dev Kit. For more details, please refer to the instructions provided on the USB drive shipped with the Dev Kit. The firmware can be downloaded from our website You may also try to restart your computer after all above fail.
What does each column represent in the txt data collected by the MFAM Development Kit using the WiFi firmware?   1 Relevance 2 years ago Rui Zhang Hardware
The header for each column is shown below. For more detailed explanation, please refer to the page 32 of the Dev Kit User Guide. A sample of the TXT data is also attached here. Attachment : WiFi TXT.zip
MagArrow Debugging   1 Relevance 2 years ago Rui Zhang Hardware
If any errors occur, connect to and look for any error messages. Please note that for "Combined sensor" (dead-zone-free) MagArrows, there is ONLY one reading in Mag1. Mag2 Data Valid is always "NO". If the above webpage doesn't load, for embedded software release after July 2023 (version 3.0.1947-941 or later), a log file named "geometrics.log" is generated in the USB drive inside MagArrow. Remove the USB from the MagArrow and open the log file. Detailed description of the error can be found. Refer to the following forum post for more information about reading dropout issues:

How to switch the operating mode for SuperMag (LCS100S) MFAM?   1 Relevance 3 years ago Gretchen Schmauder Hardware
Detailed instructions for changing the operating mode of the SuperMag(LCS100S) MFAM through the SPI can be found in the Module User Guide, located in the USB drive shipped with the product. The operating mode can be changed through the MagViewMFAM software (software installation is also in the USB drive). Use the MagViewMFAM to connect to the MFAM. After startup, the "Run Mode" indicates the current operating modes. To change the operating modes, choose "Run Mode" in the "Command Menu" and then select a different mode in the drop-down menu. Click "Send Command" button to change to the selected mode. To set the current modes as the default startup operating modes, select "Save Settings" and click "Send Command". Power cycle and make sure that the default startup operating modes have been saved.
Missing records from magnetometer export   1 Relevance 3 years ago Magnetics SW General Magnetometer Info
If you're exporting data from G-864, MagArrow, or MagEx, using any of the export tools - Quick Conversion, Command-line conversion, or export from a project and survey in Survey Manager - and you don't get any data, or you think the export is missing some data, follow these steps: Verify that you have records to export: In survey manager, verify that the survey has data in it: there's a "Measurements" field in the survey details. For MagArrow, if you're using Quick Conversion or the command line program, you will need to create a project and survey in Survey Manager and import the .magdata file into it. If you don't have any data records, then verify that you've opened the correct file. If you have records, but they just don't seem to be exporting, then choose to export invalid records and records without locations The export functions in Survey Manager allow you to choose this option with the "Filter" choices: Look in the exported file for records without locations (no GPS) and with invalid records; they are not included in the default exports. For MagArrow, export with 1000 samples/second. If you are troubleshooting an export at a decimated rate (e.g. 20 samples/second) then note that a single invalid record in the 1000 samples/second original data may invalidate about 1/2 second of data; in a 20 samples/second MagArrow decimation, a single 1000 samples/second invalid record will invalidate about 10 decimated results.
