🧭 How to Import Geophone Elevation Data into Plotrefa
If you have measured relative or absolute geophone elevations, you can incorporate these into your velocity model in Plotrefa to produce more geologically realistic results.
📄 Step 1: Prepare the Elevation File
Create an ASCII text file with two columns:
The left column contains geophone horizontal positions (in meters or feet).
The right column contains the corresponding elevation values.
Example:
0.0 100.0 5.0 101.2 10.0 101.5 ... 100.0 89.0
✅ Tip: While it’s recommended to have an elevation for each geophone, it’s not strictly required. Plotrefa will interpolate missing elevations as needed.
📥 Step 2: Import the Elevation Data
Open Plotrefa.
From the top menu, go to:Velocity model > Import elevation data file
Navigate to your file and double-click it to Import.📌 Note: There is no default file extension, so ensure your file is visible in the dialog.
The elevation profile will now display alongside your data.
🎯 Step 3: Interpret Your Data
Once your elevation profile is Imported:
Proceed with your velocity modeling or time-term inversion.
The resulting velocity model will be drawn relative to the elevation profile, accounting for topography.

Hello, I wanted to try our MagEditor software, but it didn't accept any of the files I converted to 10 Hz, 20 Hz, 50 Hz, 100 Hz, and 1000 Hz CSV formats from Survey Manager. What's the reason and how can I fix it? My operating system is Windows 11 Home Single, and my computer specifications are:Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-14900HX (2.20 GHz)Installed RAM: 32.0 GB (usable: 31.6 GB)System type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor.
1. Establish WIFI connection between your PC and the MagStation.
2. Open a web browser and type in .
Attachment : image.png
3. Click "Delete project storage" or "Download survey data" to delete or down raw data from micro-SD card. We recommend deleting raw data files after 700 hours data collection.
4. The downloaded survey data is in .magdata format. To convert it to CSV, open Survey Manager and create a new MagStation project. Inside the project, create a new survey. Select the survey name, click "Import Data" and then choose the .magdata file. After successful Import, click "Export CSV".
If the system has a large amount of survey data, it may affect the data transfer rate. Sometimes a very slow SD card makes the system unresponsive; to the user this can look like a slow/bad network connection. Therefore, it might be useful to clean up the SD card and USB drive.
Delete the Geometrics.log file on the USB drive.
Clean up the survey data on the SD card:
First, make sure that you have all the data that you need off of the SD card. Either download all survey data that you want to keep, or copy all of the contents of the SD card to another drive (perhaps to a PC).
Delete all of the data on the SD card, doing one of the following:
Use the UI to delete all of the surveys, then use the "Clean old files" button on the Admin page to empty the recycle bin on the SD card. This can be VERY slow, and because the MagArrow has a very simple web interface, the user will get no useful feedback. On a very full SD card, this process might take 30 minutes or so.
Or.... Remove the SD card from the MagArrow and after copying any data that the user still hasn't saved to a PC, format it or delete everything on it, then re-insert it. Be careful not to lose the SD card or to let it drop into the inaccessible spaces in the instrument. If you format the SD card, the ExFAT format is preferable.
If the customer can't get the data downloaded from the instrument (takes too long or stops), the data can be Imported into a survey in Survey Manager, directly from the SD card (or from the PC hard drive to which the SD card data has been copied). Then the SD card can be cleaned up or formatted.
With the new version of Survey Manager (you need to update that also, not just the instrument software), the user can Import a large survey, including all of the files in subdirectories, by selecting the "acquinfo.txt" file in the root directory of the survey, from the SD card.
More details about how to Import/export SD card files using Survey Manager can be found in the post below:

Q. We are now often being asked to provide our 2D seismic profiles to be used in real world models. When the inversion is done it has distance along line and depth/elevation as the output. Is there a way to add real world Northing/Easting coordinates into the data file so it can be more simply reference to the real world location the data was collected?
A. Thank you very much for using SeisImager. So you want to add coordinate to 2D Vp or Vs cross sections. You can use GeoPlot to add the coordinates either lat-lon or UTM.GeoPlot can Import cross sections from PlotRefa (.vs) and WaveEq (.pvs).Use "Edit", "XY coordinates (latitude-longitude)" to add the coordinates.See GeoPlot manual for more details.
If you have several cross-sections, you may use GeoPlot3D to interpolate 2D cross sections to a 3D volume.
Verify BAUD Rate selected on dip switches 6,7,8
Note: according to a customer this is how the switches are set as they are attempting a file transfer at 115200 BAUD.
Connect the G-857 to the computer using the download cable and a properly installed USB/RS-232 adaptor. (Must have FTDI):
Open the MagMap Software.
Select Import>G-857/ASCII
1. Enter known Serial Port (My computer is COM4)
2. BAUD 115200 (Switches 6, 7 and 8 off)
3. Set a good location for the file to written to.
4. Leave Download only, open later unchecked.
5. Leave download time out 2.
Select OK.
On the G-857 press OUTPUT, ENTER when this window opens.
BYTES DOWNLOADED will begin to increment.
Select OK in the window below:
The downloaded Mag file should be displayed:
If the download sequence does not happen this way, it is usually a problem with:
1. USB/RS-232 Adaptor not FTDI, or driver not installed.
2. COM PORT assignment incorrect, and/or file destination not valid.
3. BAUD RATE mismatch.
4. Faulty I/O Cable PN 16492-01.
5. Faulty Computer.
6. Faulty G-857 console.
Check to make sure that the G-857 is not in Legacy Mode:
To check if Legacy Mode is enabled press:
AUTO-OUTPUT
To turn it off press:
AUTO-OUTPUT-CLEAR
To Turn on:
AUTO-OUTPUT-ENTER
If Legacy Mode was on then the recorded data recorded needs to be downloaded as a G-856:
Every second, the NMEA strings, delimited by single quotation marks, are included as separate columns. The strings also contains commas. Therefore, there will be more columns if you use comma as the only delimiter.
The correct Import setting should be comma-separated, with single quotation marks as string delimiters. All of those "extra" columns will be revealed as the original RMC and GGA NMEA strings.
The Geometrics magnetometer softwares check for some uncommon anomalies in GNSS location and timing messages in data collected with the G-864, MagEx, and MagArrow instruments.
These anomalies have occurred in data from a few instruments:
Extra PPS timing signals – Sometimes the PPS sensor in the instrument receives an extra timing signal that’s out of phase with the normal 1-second interval. These are almost always easily identified and discarded.
GNSS timing anomalies – Very rarely, the GNSS appears to change its mind about the current time or location. For example, after recording a time at 06:30:21, the next measurement – received one second later – might show a time of 6:30:15 – 16 seconds earlier.
GNSS location anomalies – A GNSS timing jump may be accompanied by a location jump.
Geometrics’ software now makes additional checks for these anomalies, corrects them when possible, and reports them if they affect the use or visualization of the data. Some of the checking is in the instruments, some in MagNav, and some in Survey Manager.
Users will notice these anomalies and the functionality to repair and report them in these ways:
During Import or export, the software identifies an anomaly. If it’s judged to be worth reporting – most likely because it affects the reported locations of magnetometer readings – then it is logged and the user asked to review the log file.
The user exports data and notices something unusual, for example a discontinuity in the GNSS times or locations. The customer should review the software’s log files for additional information.
These anomalies are unusual; the type where the GPS changes its mind about the time or location is exceedingly rare and will never be seen by most customers. The main effect of the new functionality is that the data validation process will now be more visible to users.
Customers can pre-define a survey area using Google Earth Pro and load the KML file into MagNav app.
Open Google Earth Pro. Navigate to your survey area and click “Add Path”.
Move your cursor and left click to define the outline of your survey area. You can rename your path name and click OK.
Select the new path created and right click it. In the pop-up menu, click “Save Place As” to save it as a kml file.
Open the Survey Manager. Load an existing project or create a new project. Inside the project, create a new survey. Set up other preferred parameters. Click “Select Route File” and load the saved kml file. Make sure to click “Save” before exiting
Plug in a USB drive and copy the project (.dbt file) to the USB.
Eject the USB from your computer to make sure it can be safely removed.
Turn on the instrument and the Getac tablet. Make sure the wifi is connected.
Plug the USB drive into the Getac tablet.
Open the MagNav app. Click “Import Project” to load the project (.dbt file) from the USB.
Enter the project and enter the survey. On the Navigation page, the path created in Google Earth will be displayed, which can be served as guidelines or outlines for GPS surveys. Marker points can be created similarly for marked surveys.
If you're exporting data from G-864, MagArrow, or MagEx, using any of the export tools - Quick Conversion, Command-line conversion, or export from a project and survey in Survey Manager - and you don't get any data, or you think the export is missing some data, follow these steps:
Verify that you have records to export:
In survey manager, verify that the survey has data in it: there's a "Measurements" field in the survey details. For MagArrow, if you're using Quick Conversion or the command line program, you will need to create a project and survey in Survey Manager and Import the .magdata file into it.
If you don't have any data records, then verify that you've opened the correct file.
If you have records, but they just don't seem to be exporting, then choose to export invalid records and records without locations
The export functions in Survey Manager allow you to choose this option with the "Filter" choices:
Look in the exported file for records without locations (no GPS) and with invalid records; they are not included in the default exports.
For MagArrow, export with 1000 samples/second. If you are troubleshooting an export at a decimated rate (e.g. 20 samples/second) then note that a single invalid record in the 1000 samples/second original data may invalidate about 1/2 second of data; in a 20 samples/second MagArrow decimation, a single 1000 samples/second invalid record will invalidate about 10 decimated results.
