RE: Choosing the Right Lithium Polymer Battery for your MagEx

Some 7100 mAH batteries will work in the MagEx as well. One of those is linked below, as well as two 6200 mAH batteries. Only one of the 7100 mAH batteries will fit - the other must be 6200 mAH or less. These are big batteries that will last a long time between charges, Smaller batteries will work as well but for a shorter time. A good rule of thumb is one hour of operation for each 900 mAH of capacity (at 23 degrees C). Colder temperatures will lower the capacity significantly. The links are to an Amazon USA website. What are the differences between the standard MFAM and the SX version?
Hardware
Gretchen Sch...

2 Relevance
The only difference between the standard and SX version is the sensitivity is 4pT/rt-Hz and 20 pT/rt-Hz respectively. Here is an expected response with the magnetometer moving past a generic magnetic projectile: In this case the amplitude is about 1nT in total from peak to peak. The feature itself is quite distinguishable. This is assuming there is no noise in the system. Here is what the data looks like with 4pT/rt-Hz noise: You can see the general structure is still there but there is a little more wiggle on the trace that is associated with the noise of the system. Here is the data with 20 pT/rt-Hz noise: Again, here the structure is clearly visible but the data looks a bit noisier. With some signal processing technique, such as low pass filtering, noises can be further reduced. Please note that in real surveys, detecting 1nT peak-peak anomalies is always a big challenge even with the most sensitive magnetometers due to other noise sources, such as motion noises and environmental noises. Therefore, SX version is in general NOT the limiting factor for conducting surveys. To understand this concept better, you can use the magnetic gradient tool developed by our partner in the UK, Geomatrix Earth Science.

Why does my MagArrow have 0 readings or missing records?
Hardware
Rui Zhang

2 Relevance
There are many reasons causing 0 readings or missing records: 1. MagArrow is dead-zone-free. But this doesn't mean it can be operated in any environment. If the background magnetic field is outside its operating range (20-100uT) or its gradient is too large, MagArrow will have readings of 0 (or dropouts). Usually this happens when you test the instrument inside a building. One way is to place the MagArrow on a wood/plastic table. 2. The default conversion of Survey Manager is NOT to include data points without locations. Inside a building, you may not have GPS signal, leading to missing records. This topic is also discussed in Missing records from magnetometer export. 3. If the 0 readings occur during a survey, especially consistently along a certain direction, you may want to check the operating status of 2 sensors inside the MagArrow. First, make sure your MagArrow embedded software is MagArrowSetup-3.0.1915-881 or later. If not, please go to our website MagArrow embedded software update, download and install the latest embedded software(instruction inside the downloaded zip file). Connect to the new webpage ( .). The "Operating status" of each magnetometer, as shown below, should be "OK". If not, please record the error code and power cycle. To finish the survey, please keep an eye on this status whenever the MagArrow returns to the base during the survey (power cycle if error). If the error occurs more than twice during your survey (make sure it is not an isolated event), please contact Geometrics and report the error code. Please note that for "Combined sensor" (dead-zone-free) MagArrows, there is ONLY one reading in Mag1. Mag2 Data Valid is always "NO".

As of 08/2023 these are good batteries to use (links are to USA Amazon site): OVONIC 3s Lipo Battery 35C Gens ace 3S LiPo Battery 11.1V 2200mAh 35C Soft Case Pack with XT60 Plug These "shorty" battery packs have the advantage of being much shorter for a given milliamp hour rating, making them easier to fit in the MagArrow battery compartment.

If any errors occur, connect to and look for any error messages. Please note that for "Combined sensor" (dead-zone-free) MagArrows, there is ONLY one reading in Mag1. Mag2 Data Valid is always "NO". If the above webpage doesn't load, for embedded software Release after July 2023 (version 3.0.1947-941 or later), a log file named "geometrics.log" is generated in the USB drive inside MagArrow. Remove the USB from the MagArrow and open the log file. Detailed description of the error can be found. Refer to the following forum post for more information about reading dropout issues:

@matsuda We provide a sample MagElement data logging code for AUV/ASV users. They write their own data logging software. The sample code can be found here: Our partner, Chesapeake Technology, developed MagElement data logging function in their SonarWiz software. If you have Windows OS on your platform, You can also use "MagViewMagElement" as well.

How to bulk process MagArrow magdata files?
Software
Rui Zhang

If you have many .magdata files to convert, it is more convenient to use the command-based MagArrowConverter, instead of the Windows-based Survey Manager. The MagArrowConverter installation file can be downloaded from MagArrow product link under firmware/software download: To use the MagArrowConverter: Run “MagArrowConverterInstaller.exe” to install the converter. It is recommended NOT to install the converter on the default C:\Program Files\ directory since some computer may not allow users to create files in this directory. Open Windows Command (“cmd”) and enter the directory where the converter is installed. Type MagArrowConverter and press Enter key. A short instruction of how to use the converter will be printed out. If you run it from a different directory, type the full path, e.g. "C:\ Geometrics\MagArrowConverter\MagArrowConverter" (assuming the program is installed in C:\ Geometrics\MagArrowConverter\ directory). Note that to change the installation directory, you will have to un-installed the program first and then re-install and set up the directory. A typical example command: …\MagArrowConverter type=MA1 format=csv1 input=”C:\test\test.magdata” output=”C:\test\test.csv” decimation=10 A new csv file with sample rate of 10Hz will be created in C:\test directory from test.magdata file. After you become familiar with MagArrowConverter command, you can write a simple Batch Script to bulk process MagArrow .magdata files. An example batch code which searches for .magdata files in "C:\MagArrowData" folder and converts all files to .csv files at 10Hz is attached below. Attachment : batch example.zip

Why does data transfer through WiFi become slow?
Hardware
Rui Zhang
1 Relevance
If the system has a large amount of survey data, it may affect the data transfer rate. Sometimes a very slow SD card makes the system unresponsive; to the user this can look like a slow/bad network connection. Therefore, it might be useful to clean up the SD card and USB drive. Delete the Geometrics.log file on the USB drive. Clean up the survey data on the SD card: First, make sure that you have all the data that you need off of the SD card. Either download all survey data that you want to keep, or copy all of the contents of the SD card to another drive (perhaps to a PC). Delete all of the data on the SD card, doing one of the following: Use the UI to delete all of the surveys, then use the "Clean old files" button on the Admin page to empty the recycle bin on the SD card. This can be VERY slow, and because the MagArrow has a very simple web interface, the user will get no useful feedback. On a very full SD card, this process might take 30 minutes or so. Or.... Remove the SD card from the MagArrow and after copying any data that the user still hasn't saved to a PC, format it or delete everything on it, then re-insert it. Be careful not to lose the SD card or to let it drop into the inaccessible spaces in the instrument. If you format the SD card, the ExFAT format is preferable. If the customer can't get the data downloaded from the instrument (takes too long or stops), the data can be imported into a survey in Survey Manager, directly from the SD card (or from the PC hard drive to which the SD card data has been copied). Then the SD card can be cleaned up or formatted. With the new version of Survey Manager (you need to update that also, not just the instrument software), the user can import a large survey, including all of the files in subdirectories, by selecting the "acquinfo.txt" file in the root directory of the survey, from the SD card. More details about how to import/export SD card files using Survey Manager can be found in the post below: SD card files conversion

@kuldeep, No, the data streaming is ONLY through the Ethernet port, not the UART5 port. Current instrument software does not support the UART5 streaming. An example C code to stream MFAM data through the Dev Kit using TCP protocol can be found at:
