Magnetometer Carts
Non-magnetic carts are a great tool for anyone doing magnetometer surveying. Carts stabilize the sensor, reducing the adverse effects of sensor movement when walking. Carts cut down on operator fatigue and reduce the likelihood of mistakes caused by a tired field crew. Carts also facilitate the mounting of positional devices like GPS.

The cart shown opposite is designed by Geometrics. It is extremely light and simple, facilitating easy field repair. The cart is constructed of aluminum and carbon fiber. It provides a stable platform for high-sensitivity surveys by eliminating stride bounce and other sensor altitude variations. Sensors can be mounted in either a horizontal or vertical gradiometer configuration,

Geometrics cart (opposite) breaks down to a small, shippable format. For those doing ordnance, archaeological or other high-density surveys, it is an indispensable tool. The complete cart sells for $1,640.

Other Carts
The following photos show some versatile deployments of magnetic sensors to take advantage of the increased analytical capability of gradiometer arrays and improved data quality when deploying the sensors from a stable platform. Magnetic data may be acquired at a fast walking pace and thus allow coverage of large areas rapidly and at low cost. Opposite is a photo of a four sensor cart with concatenation box and GPS.

Here is a combined bicycle and GPS system used by Southwest Research Institute for impact crater research.

A new option combining the G-858 and a specially modified Trimble GPS unit (agGPS-132 or agGPS 114 with Parallel Swathing Option) is now available. This system provides in a single man carry package the ability to systematically cover an area without layout or pre-marking of the lines. The operator simply follows easily seen left/right steering commands in real time to cover the entire area. Magnetics and Lat/Long position are simultaneously recorded into memory and available for immediate downloading and plotting at any time. The system incorporates the use of the Omnistar Differential correction system with accuracy better than one meter. All components are modified to insure they are non-magnetic and are fully integrated as an operational system.

MagMap2000 Software is provided as part of the basic G-858 system to download the field data into your PC, correct for diurnal or positional errors, make the gradiometer subtraction, show 2D and 3D contour images and reformat all data for export to Surfer for Windows or Geosoft plotting programs. Provision is also made to download data from our G-856 proton magnetometer when used as a base station. This combination of G-858 and G-856 is an excellent complimentary ir. Other facilities include spike filtering, data relocationand plotting GPS track as well as conversion to UTM Coordinates.

Model G-858 is excellent for many different applications including: petroleum and mineral exploration, all types of environmental surveys, archeological investigations, unexploded ordnance and the detection and mapping of pipelines, cables and other utilities. The system is especially powerful for use in detailed environmental investigations where the very high sensitivity and sampling rates not only detect but facilitates accurate mapping of very subtle features frequently missed in the past. Use of non-magnetic carts can enhance the detection capability for all these applications because of the fixed sensor altitude and low platform noise.
