Estimating optimal depth for a marine tow fish is difficult because forces acting on the tow-fish are surprisingly complex, with the most influential factors being weight of the tow-fish, length of the cable deployed, and speed of the survey vessel. To help solve this estimation problem, go to the Geometrics website at http://www.geometrics.com/TowDepth.htm and use the Tow Fish Depth Estimator. This software program lets you adjust speed of the survey vessel, weight of the fish, and length of cable deployed by clicking left and right arrows for each parameter. With an estimate of tow fish depth you can plan your survey and get close to target objects without damaging the tow fish.
The program lets you adjust the speed of the survey vessel, weight of the fish, and length of the cable by clicking left and right arrows for each parameter. The amount of adjustment per click can be tuned by changing the increment value.
